Simon Fraser University for international students

With several world-class universities and a standard public schooling system, Canada presents prospective students with a wide array of programs to ensure an optimum learning experience. Student grants and international scholarships are also options that can benefit students.

About Simon Fraser University

Simon Fraser University was established in 1965 and has three campuses spread out in Vancouver, Surrey, and Burnaby of the province of British Colombia. SFU hosts over 35,000 students and offers over 95 different undergraduate programs.

SFU is a research university that has innovation and community outreach as a core part of its educational system. The university combines online lessons with weekend and night classes in a bid to meet the learning needs of its students.

Study in Simon Fraser University as an International student

Simon Fraser is ranked as #323 in Global World Rankings and is one of the top universities in Burnaby, Canada. The university is especially renowned for Social Justice and research into social inequality issues.

It may not be on par with UBC or McGill but it is another popular choice for students around the world. Simon Fraser’s acceptance rate for international students is around 31% and they have options for undergraduate and graduate studies as well as an exchange student program.

Admission requirements vary depending on what type and length of the program the applicant is interested in. But the first thing interested students need to do is create an account with SFU.

The account will enable them to connect with admission advisors and check out some campus events. Advisors can help guide you on what program you should look into and whether you meet the requirements.

Tuition Fees and Scholarships

Compared to some of the other universities listed in this article, Simon Fraser University’s tuition fees for international students is on the lower side. One year of tuition fees for an undergraduate program is approximately $29,380.

This does not factor in the additional costs of living expenses, books, or medical insurance.

While SFU assumes (rightly) that international students will arrange their own funding and financing of their education, the Financial Aid and Awards Office does provide scholarships and bursaries to international students to alleviate some of the financial burdens.

SFU has a reputation for innovation and excellence. It offers a quality education at a more affordable price and making it a great option for high-achieving international students who want a Canadian education but have a smaller budget.

History of Simon Fraser University

Simon Fraser University was established on September 9, 1965, with just 2,500 students. It is located on the West coast of British Columbia and is named after the early explorer Simon Fraser who died on August 18, 1862.

The original Burnaby Mountain campus of the SFU was designed by the prominent Canadian architects Arthur Erickson and Geoffrey Massey. The campus was specifically designed to accommodate the Schools idea of fostering interdisciplinary communication between students and researchers. This brazen openness and desire to always be ahead in terms of creativity forms the bedrock of the School’s current vision: to be the leading engaged university defined by its dynamic integration of innovative education, cutting-edge research, and far-reaching community engagement.

In over fifty years of existence, the university has matured into one of the world’s leading teaching and research universities, hosting 35,000 students, 6,500 faculty and staff, and more than 160,000 alumni.
