History and Milestone

In the spate of about two centuries, McGill University has managed to blaze an academic trail that has seen them sweep awards and achieve unprecedented feats in the area of scientific and medical research. Founded by James McGill in 1821, the University has not only dominated the academic field but has also shown that it is an institution that prides itself on the all-round development of its students through its contribution to sports.

This contribution can be seen in the significant role the school played in the creation of three pillars of sport.

Firstly, the very first modern football game was played in 1874, between McGill University and a squad from Harvard. At this, the sport was still in its infancy, and the rules evolved even as the match progressed.

McGill can also be said to be the birthplace of hockey, although Kingston, Dartmouth, Halifax, and even Windsor have also laid claim to that title, depending on how hockey is defined. The world’s first official hockey team, the McGill Hockey Club, made its debut in 1877, and some of its players helped modify its rules.

Finally, James Naismith, a McGill grad who today is regarded as the father of basketball, created the sport in 1891 while working at a Massachusetts YMCA.

Scientific Discoveries and Innovations

Over the years, McGill has made some notable contributions to the Science and Medical field, which earned the school its status as one of the leading institutions when it comes to medical research and innovative ideas.

One of such positive impacts made is in the Cardiology field by the introduction of the book, Atlas of Congenital Cardiac Disease. The book was published in 1936 by Dr. Maude Abbott, who was working at McGill at the time. It paved the way for modern heart surgery by stimulating diagnostic, physiological, and surgical advances.

In the area of genetics, McGill pharmacology professor Moshe Szyf, through his pioneering research, has proven that exposure to external factors such as toxins and nutrients can activate chemical reactions in the body, which can alter the gene function.

In atomic physics and chemistry, Ernest Rutherford who was a professor in McGill, made groundbreaking discoveries, which became the stepping stone for other scientists to build on. In 1908 Rutherford earned a Nobel Prize for chemistry for his work on atoms.

Other pioneers whose works have contributed to the renowned status of the McGill University include Thomas Chang, John Humphrey, Stephen Leacock, Margaret Lock, Charles Taylor, William Osler, and many more.
