The Basics
Who Can Study in Canada?
In order to study in Canada you need to be over 18 years of age and you need to be enrolled at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI), this means a school that has been approved to host international students. Primary and secondary schools are automatically deemed DLI.
You must also have enough money to cover tuition fees and living expenses for yourself and any dependents. The usual checks and exams are also applicable.
How do I Get a Study Permit?
To qualify for a study permit, you must be accepted into a program of study at a DLI and have a valid passport or travel documentation.
You can apply for your permit as soon as you receive your acceptance letter, either online or in person at a visa application center. You will need to pay fees and submit your biometrics. It can take up to three months to get your permit.
Are There Scholarships for Foreign Students?
Studying in Canada as an international student can be expensive, but thankfully almost every educational institution offers scholarships and bursaries for foreign students. The eligibility criteria, requirements and the amount for these scholarships vary from institution to institution.
The Federal government provides options for financial aid and loans to foreign students as well. International students can also take a loan from a Canadian bank if they have a Canadian citizen as a co-signer.
Can I Work While Studying in Canada?
Absolutely yes. In fact it’s an option that many foreign students choose to finance their education. All you need is for your study permit to include a condition allowing you to work legally in Canada while you’re studying.
Keep in mind you can only start working once you begin your studies. Many programs include a co-op or internship option, so you’ll need a work permit for that as well.
